Small-molecule NNMT inhibitor · Fact sheet
5-Amino-1MQ
Also known as 5A1MQ · 5-amino-1-methylquinolinium
5-Amino-1MQ is a small-molecule inhibitor of the enzyme NNMT. Mouse studies found changes in fat mass and metabolism, but the cited evidence does not establish human weight-loss benefits or a human safety profile.
What is 5-Amino-1MQ?
NNMT is nicotinamide N-methyltransferase, an enzyme involved in cellular metabolism. 5-Amino-1MQ is not a peptide and should not be equated with every compound that inhibits NNMT.
Benefits people look for
Fat loss, higher energy, and changes in NAD metabolism generate interest. Mechanistic overlap with NAD pathways does not prove an anti-aging benefit.
What the evidence supports
- Mouse studies reported less fat accumulation and improved metabolic measures.
- A 28-day mouse study found changes in glucose handling and liver fat; these are preclinical outcomes.
All research areas
- NNMT inhibition
- Obesity models
- Liver and metabolic biomarkers
Anecdotal reports & lived experiences
Reports describe what someone noticed. They cannot establish cause, typical results, or how often a side effect happens.
No attributable personal reports are summarized here yet. The benefits above describe research interests; the side effects below come from the cited medical sources.
We do not fill this gap with unsourced testimonials or estimated success rates.
Side effects & risks
- The reviewed evidence does not provide a validated list or frequency of human side effects.
- Short animal studies cannot exclude human organ toxicity, interactions, or long-term harms.
This is a summary of the cited evidence, not a complete product label. A lack of human safety data does not establish safety.
Clinical research: how strong is it?
Mostly animal or lab researchThe principal studies use diet-induced obese mice and cultured cells. Different experiments include dietary changes, so their results cannot all be attributed to the compound alone.

FDA approval & research status
5-Amino-1MQ has no FDA-approved therapeutic use. The cited cell and mouse studies support preclinical research, not a proven human weight-loss intervention.
No FDA-approved use is documented in the records summarized on this page.
Preclinical compound; no FDA-approved use
5-Amino-1MQ has no FDA-approved therapeutic use. The cited cell and mouse studies support preclinical research, not a proven human weight-loss intervention.
This summarizes the cited product or research record. Trial phases do not establish successful completion of earlier stages, and a stopped program is not ongoing development. Approval applies only to the labeled product, use and population.
What we still don’t know
- Human efficacy and clinically meaningful outcomes
- Human pharmacokinetics and interactions
- Long-term safety and product comparability
The takeaway
5-Amino-1MQ is a research lead for metabolism, with human benefits and harms still unresolved.
